Sahih al-Bukhari — Call to Prayers (Adhaan)

Narrated Thabit:Anas said, "I will leave no stone unturned in making you offer the prayer as I have seen the Prophet (ﷺ) making us offer it." Anas used to do a thing which I have not seen you doing. He used to stand after the bowing for such a long time that one would think that he had forgotten (the prostrations) and he used to sit in-between the prostrations so long that one would think that he had forgotten the second prostration

حدثنا سليمان بن حرب، قال حدثنا حماد بن زيد، عن ثابت، عن انس رضى الله عنه قال اني لا الو ان اصلي بكم كما رايت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي بنا. قال ثابت كان انس يصنع شييا لم اركم تصنعونه، كان اذا رفع راسه من الركوع قام حتى يقول القايل قد نسي. وبين السجدتين حتى يقول القايل قد نسي

Narrated Anas bin Malik:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Be straight in the prostrations and none of you should put his forearms on the ground (in the prostration) like a dog

حدثنا محمد بن بشار، قال حدثنا محمد بن جعفر، قال حدثنا شعبة، قال سمعت قتادة، عن انس بن مالك، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " اعتدلوا في السجود، ولا يبسط احدكم ذراعيه انبساط الكلب

Narrated Malik bin Huwairith Al-Laithi:I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) praying and in the odd rak`at, he used to sit for a moment before getting up

حدثنا محمد بن الصباح، قال اخبرنا هشيم، قال اخبرنا خالد الحذاء، عن ابي قلابة، قال اخبرنا مالك بن الحويرث الليثي، انه راى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي، فاذا كان في وتر من صلاته لم ينهض حتى يستوي قاعدا

Narrated Aiyub:Abu Qilaba said, "Malik bin Huwairith came to us and led us in the prayer in this mosque of ours and said, 'I lead you in prayer but I do not want to offer the prayer but just to show you how Allah's Apostle performed his prayers." I asked Abu Qilaba, "How was the prayer of Malik bin Huwairith?" He replied, "Like the prayer of this Sheikh of ours-- i.e. `Amr bin Salima." That Sheikh used to pronounce the Takbir perfectly and when he raised his head from the second prostration he would sit for a while and then support himself on the ground and get up

حدثنا معلى بن اسد، قال حدثنا وهيب، عن ايوب، عن ابي قلابة، قال جاءنا مالك بن الحويرث فصلى بنا في مسجدنا هذا فقال اني لاصلي بكم، وما اريد الصلاة، ولكن اريد ان اريكم كيف رايت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي. قال ايوب فقلت لابي قلابة وكيف كانت صلاته قال مثل صلاة شيخنا هذا يعني عمرو بن سلمة قال ايوب وكان ذلك الشيخ يتم التكبير، واذا رفع راسه عن السجدة الثانية جلس واعتمد على الارض، ثم قام

Narrated Sa`id bin Al-Harith:Abu Sa`id led us in the prayer and said the Takbir aloud on arising from the prostration, and on prostrating, on rising again, and on getting up from the second rak`a. Abu Sa`id said, "I saw the Prophet doing the same

حدثنا يحيى بن صالح، قال حدثنا فليح بن سليمان، عن سعيد بن الحارث، قال صلى لنا ابو سعيد فجهر بالتكبير حين رفع راسه من السجود، وحين سجد، وحين رفع، وحين قام من الركعتين وقال هكذا رايت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم

Narrated Mutarrif:`Imran and I prayed behind `Ali bin Abi Talib and he said Takbir on prostrating, on rising and on getting up after the two rak`at (i.e. after the second rak`a). When the prayer was finished, `Imran took me by the hand and said, "He (`Ali) has prayed the prayer of Muhammad" (or said, "He made us remember the prayer of Muhammad)

حدثنا سليمان بن حرب، قال حدثنا حماد بن زيد، قال حدثنا غيلان بن جرير، عن مطرف، قال صليت انا وعمران، صلاة خلف علي بن ابي طالب رضى الله عنه فكان اذا سجد كبر، واذا رفع كبر، واذا نهض من الركعتين كبر، فلما سلم اخذ عمران بيدي فقال لقد صلى بنا هذا صلاة محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم. او قال لقد ذكرني هذا صلاة محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Abdullah:I saw `Abdullah bin `Umar crossing his legs while sitting in the prayer and I, a mere youngster in those days, did the same. Ibn `Umar forbade me to do so, and said, "The proper way is to keep the right foot propped up and bend the left in the prayer." I said questioningly, "But you are doing so (crossing the legs)." He said, "My feet cannot bear my weight

حدثنا عبد الله بن مسلمة، عن مالك، عن عبد الرحمن بن القاسم، عن عبد الله بن عبد الله، انه اخبره انه، كان يرى عبد الله بن عمر رضى الله عنهما يتربع في الصلاة اذا جلس، ففعلته وانا يوميذ حديث السن، فنهاني عبد الله بن عمر وقال انما سنة الصلاة ان تنصب رجلك اليمنى وتثني اليسرى. فقلت انك تفعل ذلك. فقال ان رجلى لا تحملاني

Narrated Muhammad bin `Amr bin `Ata':I was sitting with some of the companions of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and we were discussing about the way of praying of the Prophet. Abu Humaid As-Sa`idi said, "I remember the prayer of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) better than any one of you. I saw him raising both his hands up to the level of the shoulders on saying the Takbir; and on bowing he placed his hands on both knees and bent his back straight, then he stood up straight from bowing till all the vertebrate took their normal positions. In prostrations, he placed both his hands on the ground with the forearms away from the ground and away from his body, and his toes were facing the Qibla. On sitting In the second rak`a he sat on his left foot and propped up the right one; and in the last rak`a he pushed his left foot forward and kept the other foot propped up and sat over the buttocks

حدثنا يحيى بن بكير، قال حدثنا الليث، عن خالد، عن سعيد، عن محمد بن عمرو بن حلحلة، عن محمد بن عمرو بن عطاء،. وحدثنا الليث، عن يزيد بن ابي حبيب، ويزيد بن محمد، عن محمد بن عمرو بن حلحلة، عن محمد بن عمرو بن عطاء، انه كان جالسا مع نفر من اصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فذكرنا صلاة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال ابو حميد الساعدي انا كنت احفظكم لصلاة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم رايته اذا كبر جعل يديه حذاء منكبيه، واذا ركع امكن يديه من ركبتيه، ثم هصر ظهره، فاذا رفع راسه استوى حتى يعود كل فقار مكانه، فاذا سجد وضع يديه غير مفترش ولا قابضهما، واستقبل باطراف اصابع رجليه القبلة، فاذا جلس في الركعتين جلس على رجله اليسرى ونصب اليمنى، واذا جلس في الركعة الاخرة قدم رجله اليسرى ونصب الاخرى وقعد على مقعدته. وسمع الليث يزيد بن ابي حبيب ويزيد من محمد بن حلحلة وابن حلحلة من ابن عطاء. قال ابو صالح عن الليث كل فقار. وقال ابن المبارك عن يحيى بن ايوب قال حدثني يزيد بن ابي حبيب ان محمد بن عمرو حدثه كل فقار

Narrated `Abdullah bin Buhaina:(he was from the tribe of Uzd Shanu'a [??] and was the ally of the tribe of `Abdul-Manaf and was one of the companions of the Prophet): Once the Prophet (ﷺ) led us in the Zuhr prayer and stood up after the second rak`a and did not sit down. The people stood up with him. When the prayer was about to end and the people were waiting for him to say the Taslim, he said Takbir while sitting and prostrated twice before saying the Taslim and then he said the Taslim

حدثنا ابو اليمان، قال اخبرنا شعيب، عن الزهري، قال حدثني عبد الرحمن بن هرمز، مولى بني عبد المطلب وقال مرة مولى ربيعة بن الحارث ان عبد الله ابن بحينة وهو من ازد شنوءة وهو حليف لبني عبد مناف، وكان من اصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم. ان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم صلى بهم الظهر فقام في الركعتين الاوليين لم يجلس، فقام الناس معه حتى اذا قضى الصلاة، وانتظر الناس تسليمه، كبر وهو جالس، فسجد سجدتين قبل ان يسلم ثم سلم

Narrated `Abdullah bin Malik bin Buhaina:Once Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) led us in the Zuhr prayer and got up (after the prostrations of the second rak`a) although he should have sat (for the Tashahhud). So at the end of the prayer, he prostrated twice while sitting (prostrations of Sahu)

حدثنا قتيبة بن سعيد، قال حدثنا بكر، عن جعفر بن ربيعة، عن الاعرج، عن عبد الله بن مالك ابن بحينة، قال صلى بنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الظهر فقام وعليه جلوس، فلما كان في اخر صلاته سجد سجدتين وهو جالس

Narrated Shaqiq bin Salama:`Abdullah said, "Whenever we prayed behind the Prophet (ﷺ) we used to recite (in sitting) 'Peace be on Gabriel, Michael, peace be on so and so. Once Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) looked back at us and said, 'Allah Himself is As-Salam (Peace), and if anyone of you prays then he should say, at-Tahiyatu li l-lahi wa ssalawatu wa t-taiyibat. As-salamu `alalika aiyuha n-Nabiyu wa rahmatu l-lahi wa barakatuh. Assalamu `alaina wa `ala `ibadi l-lahi s-salihin. (All the compliments, prayers and good things are due to Allah; peace be on you, O Prophet, and Allah's mercy and blessings [be on you]. Peace be on us an on the pious subjects of Allah). (If you say that, it will reach all the subjects in the heaven and the earth). Ash-hadu al-la ilaha illa l-lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan `Abduhu wa Rasuluh. (I testify that there is no Deity [worthy of worship] but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His slave and His Apostle

حدثنا ابو نعيم، قال حدثنا الاعمش، عن شقيق بن سلمة، قال قال عبد الله كنا اذا صلينا خلف النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قلنا السلام على جبريل وميكاييل، السلام على فلان وفلان. فالتفت الينا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال " ان الله هو السلام، فاذا صلى احدكم فليقل التحيات لله، والصلوات والطيبات، السلام عليك ايها النبي ورحمة الله وبركاته، السلام علينا وعلى عباد الله الصالحين. فانكم اذا قلتموها اصابت كل عبد لله صالح في السماء والارض، اشهد ان لا اله الا الله، واشهد ان محمدا عبده ورسوله

Narrated `Aisha:(the wife of the Prophet) Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to invoke Allah in the prayer saying "Allahumma inni a`udhu bika min `adhabi l-qabr, wa a`udhu bika min fitnati l-masihi d-dajjal, wa a`udhu bika min fitnati l-mahya wa fitnati l-mamat. Allahumma inni a`udhu bika mina l-ma'thami wa l-maghram. (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, from the afflictions of the imposter- Messiah, and from the afflictions of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from sins and from debt)." Somebody said to him, "Why do you so frequently seek refuge with Allah from being in debt?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "A person in debt tells lies whenever he speaks, and breaks promises whenever he makes (them)." `Aisha also narrated: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) in his prayer seeking refuge with Allah from the afflictions of Ad-Dajjal

حدثنا ابو اليمان، قال اخبرنا شعيب، عن الزهري، قال اخبرنا عروة بن الزبير، عن عايشة، زوج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم اخبرته ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يدعو في الصلاة " اللهم اني اعوذ بك من عذاب القبر واعوذ بك من فتنة المسيح الدجال، واعوذ بك من فتنة المحيا وفتنة الممات، اللهم اني اعوذ بك من الماثم والمغرم ". فقال له قايل ما اكثر ما تستعيذ من المغرم فقال " ان الرجل اذا غرم حدث فكذب، ووعد فاخلف ". وعن الزهري، قال اخبرني عروة، ان عايشة رضى الله عنها قالت سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يستعيذ في صلاته من فتنة الدجال

Narrated Abu Bakr As-Siddiq:I asked Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to teach me an invocation so that I may invoke Allah with it in my prayer. He told me to say, "Allahumma inni zalumtu nafsi zulman kathiran, Wala yaghfiru dh-dhunuba illa anta, fa ghfir li maghfiratan min `indika, wa r-hamni, innaka anta l-ghafuru r-rahim (O Allah! I have done great injustice to myself and none except You forgives sins, so bestow on me a forgiveness from You, and Have Mercy on me, You are the Forgiver, the Merciful)

حدثنا قتيبة بن سعيد، قال حدثنا الليث، عن يزيد بن ابي حبيب، عن ابي الخير، عن عبد الله بن عمرو، عن ابي بكر الصديق رضى الله عنه . انه قال لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم علمني دعاء ادعو به في صلاتي. قال " قل اللهم اني ظلمت نفسي ظلما كثيرا ��لا يغفر الذنوب الا انت، فاغفر لي مغفرة من عندك، وارحمني انك انت الغفور الرحيم

Narrated `Abdullah:When we prayed with the Prophet (ﷺ) we used to say, "Peace be on Allah from His slaves and peace be on so and so." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Don't say As-Salam be on Allah, for He Himself is As-Salam, but say, at-tahiyatu li l-lahi wa s-salawatu wa t-taiyibat. As-salamu `alaika aiyuha n-Nabiyu wa rahmatu l-lahi wa barakatuh. As-salamu `alaina wa `ala `ibadi l-lahi s-salihin. (If you say this then it will reach all the slaves in heaven or between heaven and earth). Ash-hadu al la-ilaha illa l-lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan `Abduhu wa Rasuluh.' Then select the invocation you like best and recite it." (See Hadith No)

حدثنا مسدد، قال حدثنا يحيى، عن الاعمش، حدثني شقيق، عن عبد الله، قال كنا اذا كنا مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في الصلاة قلنا السلام على الله من عباده، السلام على فلان وفلان. فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم " لا تقولوا السلام على الله. فان الله هو السلام، ولكن قولوا التحيات لله، والصلوات والطيبات، السلام عليك ايها النبي ورحمة الله وبركاته، السلام علينا وعلى عباد الله الصالحين. فانكم اذا قلتم اصاب كل عبد في السماء او بين السماء والارض، اشهد ان لا اله الا الله، واشهد ان محمدا عبده ورسوله، ثم يتخير من الدعاء اعجبه اليه فيدعو

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:I saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) prostrating in mud and water and saw the mark of mud on his forehead

حدثنا مسلم بن ابراهيم، قال حدثنا هشام، عن يحيى، عن ابي سلمة، قال سالت ابا سعيد الخدري فقال رايت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يسجد في الماء والطين حتى رايت اثر الطين في جبهته

Narrated Um Salama:Whenever Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) finished his prayers with Taslim, the women would get up and he would stay on for a while in his place before getting up. Ibn Shihab said, "I think (and Allah knows better), that the purpose of his stay was that the women might leave before the men who had finished their prayer

حدثنا موسى بن اسماعيل، حدثنا ابراهيم بن سعد، حدثنا الزهري، عن هند بنت الحارث، ان ام سلمة رضى الله عنها قالت كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم اذا سلم قام النساء حين يقضي تسليمه، ومكث يسيرا قبل ان يقوم. قال ابن شهاب فارى والله اعلم ان مكثه لكى ينفذ النساء قبل ان يدركهن من انصرف من القوم

Narrated `Itban bin Malik:We prayed with the Prophet (ﷺ) and used to finish our prayer with the Taslim along with him

حدثنا حبان بن موسى، قال اخبرنا عبد الله، قال اخبرنا معمر، عن الزهري، عن محمود بن الربيع، عن عتبان، قال صلينا مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فسلمنا حين سلم

Narrated Mahmud bin Ar-Rabi`:I remember Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and also the mouthful of water which he took from a bucket in our house and ejected (on me). I heard from `Itban bin Malik Al-Ansari, who was one from Bani Salim, saying, "I used to lead my tribe of Bani Salim in prayer. Once I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said to him, 'I have weak eyesight and at times the rainwater flood intervenes between me and the mosque of my tribe and I wish that you would come to my house and pray at some place so that I could take that place as a place for praying (mosque). He said, "Allah willing, I shall do that." Next day Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) along with Abu Bakr, came to my house after the sun had risen high and he asked permission to enter. I gave him permission, but he didn't sit till he said to me, "Where do you want me to pray in your house?" I pointed to a place in the house where I wanted him to pray. So he stood up for the prayer and we aligned behind him. He completed the prayer with Taslim and we did the same simultaneously

حدثنا عبدان، قال اخبرنا عبد الله، قال اخبرنا معمر، عن الزهري، قال اخبرني محمود بن الربيع،، وزعم، انه عقل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وعقل مجة مجها من دلو كان في دارهم. قال سمعت عتبان بن مالك الانصاري، ثم احد بني سالم قال كنت اصلي لقومي بني سالم، فاتيت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقلت اني انكرت بصري، وان السيول تحول بيني وبين مسجد قومي، فلوددت انك جيت فصليت في بيتي مكانا، حتى اتخذه مسجدا فقال " افعل ان شاء الله ". فغدا على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وابو بكر معه بعد ما اشتد النهار، فاستاذن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فاذنت له، فلم يجلس حتى قال " اين تحب ان اصلي من بيتك ". فاشار اليه من المكان الذي احب ان يصلي فيه، فقام فصففنا خلفه ثم سلم، وسلمنا حين سلم
