Sahih al-Bukhari — Call to Prayers (Adhaan)

Narrated Anas:The people mentioned the fire and the bell (they suggested those as signals to indicate the starting of prayers), and by that they mentioned the Jews and the Christians. Then Bilal was ordered to pronounce Adhan for the prayer by saying its wordings twice, and for the Iqama (the call for the actual standing for the prayers in rows) by saying its wordings once. (Iqama is pronounced when the people are ready for the prayer)

حدثنا عمران بن ميسرة، حدثنا عبد الوارث، حدثنا خالد الحذاء، عن ابي قلابة، عن انس، قال ذكروا النار والناقوس، فذكروا اليهود والنصارى، فامر بلال ان يشفع الاذان وان يوتر الاقامة

Narrated Ibn `Umar:When the Muslims arrived at Medina, they used to assemble for the prayer, and used to guess the time for it. During those days, the practice of Adhan for the prayers had not been introduced yet. Once they discussed this problem regarding the call for prayer. Some people suggested the use of a bell like the Christians, others proposed a trumpet like the horn used by the Jews, but `Umar was the first to suggest that a man should call (the people) for the prayer; so Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ordered Bilal to get up and pronounce the Adhan for prayers

حدثنا محمود بن غيلان، قال حدثنا عبد الرزاق، قال اخبرنا ابن جريج، قال اخبرني نافع، ان ابن عمر، كان يقول كان المسلمون حين قدموا المدينة يجتمعون فيتحينون الصلاة، ليس ينادى لها، فتكلموا يوما في ذلك، فقال بعضهم اتخذوا ناقوسا مثل ناقوس النصارى. وقال بعضهم بل بوقا مثل قرن اليهود. فقال عمر اولا تبعثون رجلا ينادي بالصلاة. فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " يا بلال قم فناد بالصلاة

Narrated Anas:Bilal was ordered to repeat the wording of the Adhan for prayers twice, and to pronounce the wording of the Iqama once except "Qad-qamat-is-salat

حدثنا سليمان بن حرب، قال حدثنا حماد بن زيد، عن سماك بن عطية، عن ايوب، عن ابي قلابة، عن انس، قال امر بلال ان يشفع، الاذان وان يوتر الاقامة الا الاقامة

Narrated Anas bin Malik:When the number of Muslims increased they discussed the question as to how to know the time for the prayer by some familiar means. Some suggested that a fire be lit (at the time of the prayer) and others put forward the proposal to ring the bell. Bilal was ordered to pronounce the wording of Adhan twice and of the Iqama once only

حدثنا محمد، قال اخبرنا عبد الوهاب، قال اخبرنا خالد الحذاء، عن ابي قلابة، عن انس بن مالك، قال لما كثر الناس قال ذكروا ان يعلموا وقت الصلاة بشىء يعرفونه، فذكروا ان يوروا نارا او يضربوا ناقوسا، فامر بلال ان يشفع الاذان وان يوتر الاقامة

Narrated Abu Qilaba:Anas said, "Bilal was ordered to pronounce the wording of Adhan twice and of Iqama once only." The sub narrator Isma`il said, "I mentioned that to Aiyub and he added (to that), "Except Iqama (i.e. Qad-qamat-is-salat which should be said twice)

حدثنا علي بن عبد الله، حدثنا اسماعيل بن ابراهيم، حدثنا خالد، عن ابي قلابة، عن انس، قال امر بلال ان يشفع، الاذان، وان يوتر الاقامة. قال اسماعيل فذكرت لايوب فقال الا الاقامة

Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "When the Adhan is pronounced Satan takes to his heels and passes wind with noise during his flight in order not to hear the Adhan. When the Adhan is completed he comes back and again takes to his heels when the Iqama is pronounced and after its completion he returns again till he whispers into the heart of the person (to divert his attention from his prayer) and makes him remember things which he does not recall to his mind before the prayer and that causes him to forget how much he has prayed

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، قال اخبرنا مالك، عن ابي الزناد، عن الاعرج، عن ابي هريرة، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " اذا نودي للصلاة ادبر الشيطان وله ضراط حتى لا يسمع التاذين، فاذا قضى النداء اقبل، حتى اذا ثوب بالصلاة ادبر، حتى اذا قضى التثويب اقبل حتى يخطر بين المرء ونفسه، يقول اذكر كذا، اذكر كذا. لما لم يكن يذكر، حتى يظل الرجل لا يدري كم صلى

Narrated `Abdur-Rahman:Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri told my father, "I see you liking sheep and the wilderness. So whenever you are with your sheep or in the wilderness and you want to pronounce Adhan for the prayer raise your voice in doing so, for whoever hears the Adhan, whether a human being, a jinn or any other creature, will be a witness for you on the Day of Resurrection." Abu Sa`id added, "I heard it (this narration) from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، قال اخبرنا مالك، عن عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن بن ابي صعصعة الانصاري، ثم المازني عن ابيه، انه اخبره ان ابا سعيد الخدري قال له " اني اراك تحب الغنم والبادية، فاذا كنت في غنمك او باديتك فاذنت بالصلاة فارفع صوتك بالنداء، فانه لا يسمع مدى صوت الموذن جن ولا انس ولا شىء الا شهد له يوم القيامة ". قال ابو سعيد سمعته من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم

Narrated Humaid:Anas bin Malik said, "Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) went out with us to fight (in Allah's cause) against any nation, he never allowed us to attack till morning and he would wait and see: if he heard Adhan he would postpone the attack and if he did not hear Adhan he would attack them." Anas added, "We reached Khaibar at night and in the morning when he did not hear the Adhan for the prayer, he (the Prophet ) rode and I rode behind Abi Talha and my foot was touching that of the Prophet. The inhabitants of Khaibar came out with their baskets and spades and when they saw the Prophet (ﷺ) they shouted 'Muhammad! By Allah, Muhammad and his army.' When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saw them, he said, "Allahu-Akbar! Allahu-Akbar! Khaibar is ruined. Whenever we approach a (hostile) nation (to fight), then evil will be the morning of those who have been warned

حدثنا قتيبة بن سعيد، قال حدثنا اسماعيل بن جعفر، عن حميد، عن انس بن مالك، ان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان اذا غزا بنا قوما لم يكن يغزو بنا حتى يصبح وينظر، فان سمع اذانا كف عنهم، وان لم يسمع اذانا اغار عليهم، قال فخرجنا الى خيبر فانتهينا اليهم ليلا، فلما اصبح ولم يسمع اذانا ركب وركبت خلف ابي طلحة، وان قدمي لتمس قدم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم. قال فخرجوا الينا بمكاتلهم ومساحيهم فلما راوا النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قالوا محمد والله، محمد والخميس. قال فلما راهم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " الله اكبر، الله اكبر، خربت خيبر، انا اذا نزلنا بساحة قوم فساء صباح المنذرين

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Whenever you hear the Adhan, say what the Mu'adh-dhin is saying

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، قال اخبرنا مالك، عن ابن شهاب، عن عطاء بن يزيد الليثي، عن ابي سعيد الخدري، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " اذا سمعتم النداء فقولوا مثل ما يقول الموذن

Narrated `Isa bin Talha:that he had heard Muawiya repeating the words of Adhan up to "Wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulul-lah (and I testify that Muhammad is Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)

حدثنا معاذ بن فضالة، قال حدثنا هشام، عن يحيى، عن محمد بن ابراهيم بن الحارث، قال حدثني عيسى بن طلحة، انه سمع معاوية، يوما فقال مثله الى قوله " واشهد ان محمدا رسول الله

Narrated Yahya as above (586) and added:"Some of my companions told me that Hisham had said, "When the Mu'adh-dhin said, "Haiyi `alassala (come for the prayer)." Muawiya said, "La hawla wala quwata illa billah (There is neither might nor any power except with Allah)" and added, "We heard your Prophet saying the same

حدثنا اسحاق بن راهويه، قال حدثنا وهب بن جرير، قال حدثنا هشام، عن يحيى، نحوه. قال يحيى وحدثني بعض، اخواننا انه قال لما قال حى على الصلاة. قال لا حول ولا قوة الا بالله. وقال هكذا سمعنا نبيكم صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Whoever after listening to the Adhan says, 'Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-dda` watit-tammah, was-salatil qa'imah, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah, wa b`ath-hu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa`adtahu' [O Allah! Lord of this perfect call (perfect by not ascribing partners to You) and of the regular prayer which is going to be established, give Muhammad the right of intercession and illustriousness, and resurrect him to the best and the highest place in Paradise that You promised him (of)], then my intercession for him will be allowed on the Day of Resurrection

حدثنا علي بن عياش، قال حدثنا شعيب بن ابي حمزة، عن محمد بن المنكدر، عن جابر بن عبد الله، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " من قال حين يسمع النداء اللهم رب هذه الدعوة التامة والصلاة القايمة ات محمدا الوسيلة والفضيلة وابعثه مقاما محمودا الذي وعدته، حلت له شفاعتي يوم القيامة

Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If the people knew the reward for pronouncing the Adhan and for standing in the first row (in congregational prayers) and found no other way to get that except by drawing lots they would draw lots, and if they knew the reward of the Zuhr prayer (in the early moments of its stated time) they would race for it (go early) and if they knew the reward of `Isha' and Fajr (morning) prayers in congregation, they would come to offer them even if they had to crawl

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، قال اخبرنا مالك، عن سمى، مولى ابي بكر عن ابي صالح، عن ابي هريرة، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " لو يعلم الناس ما في النداء والصف الاول، ثم لم يجدوا الا ان يستهموا عليه لاستهموا، ولو يعلمون ما في التهجير لاستبقوا اليه، ولو يعلمون ما في العتمة والصبح لاتوهما ولو حبوا

Narrated `Abdullah bin Al-Harith:Once on a rainy muddy day, Ibn `Abbas delivered a sermon in our presence and when the Mu'adhdhin pronounced the Adhan and said, "Haiyi `ala-s-sala(t) (come for the prayer)" Ibn `Abbas ordered him to say 'Pray at your homes.' The people began to look at each other (surprisingly). Ibn `Abbas said. "It was done by one who was much better than I (i.e. the Prophet (ﷺ) or his Mu'adh-dhin), and it is a license

حدثنا مسدد، قال حدثنا حماد، عن ايوب، وعبد الحميد، صاحب الزيادي وعاصم الاحول عن عبد الله بن الحارث قال خطبنا ابن عباس في يوم ردغ، فلما بلغ الموذن حى على الصلاة. فامره ان ينادي الصلاة في الرحال. فنظر القوم بعضهم الى بعض فقال فعل هذا من هو خير منه وانها عزمة

Narrated Salim bin `Abdullah:My father said that Allah's Apostle said, "Bilal pronounces 'Adhan at night, so keep on eating and drinking (Suhur) till Ibn Um Maktum pronounces Adhan." Salim added, "He was a blind man who would not pronounce the Adhan unless he was told that the day had dawned

حدثنا عبد الله بن مسلمة، عن مالك، عن ابن شهاب، عن سالم بن عبد الله، عن ابيه، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " ان بلالا يوذن بليل، فكلوا واشربوا حتى ينادي ابن ام مكتوم ". ثم قال وكان رجلا اعمى لا ينادي حتى يقال له اصبحت اصبحت

Narrated Hafsa:When the Mu'adh-dhin pronounced the Adhan for Fajr prayer and the dawn became evident the Prophet ordered a two rak`at light prayer (Sunna) before the Iqama of the compulsory (congregational) prayer

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، قال اخبرنا مالك، عن نافع، عن عبد الله بن عمر، قال اخبرتني حفصة، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان اذا اعتكف الموذن للصبح وبدا الصبح صلى ركعتين خفيفتين قبل ان تقام الصلاة

Narrated `Aisha:The Prophet (ﷺ) used to offer two light rak`at between the Adhan and the Iqama of the Fajr prayer

حدثنا ابو نعيم، قال حدثنا شيبان، عن يحيى، عن ابي سلمة، عن عايشة، كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي ركعتين خفيفتين بين النداء والاقامة من صلاة الصبح

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Bilal pronounces the Adhan at night, so keep on eating and drinking (Suhur) till Ibn Um Maktum pronounces the Adhan

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، اخبرنا مالك، عن عبد الله بن دينار، عن عبد الله بن عمر، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " ان بلالا ينادي بليل، فكلوا واشربوا حتى ينادي ابن ام مكتوم

Narrated `Abdullah bin Mas`ud:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The Adhan pronounced by Bilal should not stop you from taking Suhur, for he pronounces the Adhan at night, so that the one offering the late night prayer (Tahajjud) from among you might hurry up and the sleeping from among you might wake up. It does not mean that dawn or morning has started." Then he (the Prophet) pointed with his fingers and raised them up (towards the sky) and then lowered them (towards the earth) like this (Ibn Mas`ud imitated the gesture of the Prophet). Az-Zuhri gestured with his two index fingers which he put on each other and then stretched them to the right and left. These gestures illustrate the way real dawn appears. It spreads left and right horizontally. The dawn that appears in the high sky and lowers down is not the real dawn

حدثنا احمد بن يونس، قال حدثنا زهير، قال حدثنا سليمان التيمي، عن ابي عثمان النهدي، عن عبد الله بن مسعود، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " لا يمنعن احدكم او احدا منكم اذان بلال من سحوره، فانه يوذن او ينادي بليل، ليرجع قايمكم ولينبه نايمكم، وليس ان يقول الفجر او الصبح ". وقال باصابعه ورفعها الى فوق وطاطا الى اسفل حتى يقول هكذا. وقال زهير بسبابتيه احداهما فوق الاخرى ثم مدها عن يمينه وشماله

Narrated `Aisha:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Bilal pronounces the Adhan at night, so eat and drink (Suhur) till Ibn Um Maktum pronounces the Adhan

حدثنا اسحاق، قال اخبرنا ابو اسامة، قال عبيد الله حدثنا عن القاسم بن محمد، عن عايشة،. وعن نافع، عن ابن عمر، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال. ح وحدثني يوسف بن عيسى المروزي، قال حدثنا الفضل، قال حدثنا عبيد الله بن عمر، عن القاسم بن محمد، عن عايشة، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم انه قال " ان بلالا يوذن بليل، فكلوا واشربوا حتى يوذن ابن ام مكتوم
