Sahih Muslim — Fasting

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reported:We went out on an expedition with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) on the 16th of Ramadan. Some of us fasted and some of us broke the fast. But neither the observer of the fast found fault with one who broke it, nor the breaker of the fast found fault with one who observed it

حدثنا هداب بن خالد، حدثنا همام بن يحيى، حدثنا قتادة، عن ابي نضرة، عن ابي سعيد الخدري، - رضى الله عنه - قال غزونا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لست عشرة مضت من رمضان فمنا من صام ومنا من افطر فلم يعب الصايم على المفطر ولا المفطر على الصايم

A hadith like this has been narrated on the authority of Qatada with the same chain of transmitters by different narrators (except this difference) that in the hadith transmitted by Taimi and Umar b. Amir and Hisham (the date of setting out is) 18th, and in the hadith transmitted by Sa'id it is the 12th, and in the one transmitted by Shu'ba it is the 17th or 19th

حدثنا محمد بن ابي بكر المقدمي، حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد، عن التيمي، ح وحدثناه محمد بن المثنى، حدثنا ابن مهدي، حدثنا شعبة، وقال ابن المثنى، حدثنا ابو عامر، حدثنا هشام، وقال ابن المثنى، حدثنا سالم بن نوح، حدثنا عمر يعني ابن عامر، ح وحدثنا ابو بكر بن ابي شيبة حدثنا محمد بن بشر، عن سعيد، كلهم عن قتادة، بهذا الاسناد . نحو حديث همام غير ان في حديث التيمي وعمر بن عامر وهشام لثمان عشرة خلت وفي حديث سعيد في ثنتى عشرة . وشعبة لسبع عشرة او تسع عشرة

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reported:We went out on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) during Ramadan and neither the observer of the fast was found fault with for his fasting, nor the breaker of the fast for breaking it

حدثنا نصر بن علي الجهضمي، حدثنا بشر، - يعني ابن مفضل - عن ابي مسلمة، عن ابي نضرة، عن ابي سعيد، - رضى الله عنه - قال كنا نسافر مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في رمضان فما يعاب على الصايم صومه ولا على المفطر افطاره

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reported:We went out on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) during Ramadan. Some of us observed the fast and some of us broke it. Neither the observer of the fast had any grudge against one who broke it, nor the breaker of the fast had any grudge against one who had fasted They knew that he who had strength enough (to bear its rigour) fasted and that was good, and they also found that he who felt weakness (and could not bear the burden) broke it, and that was also good

حدثني عمرو الناقد، حدثنا اسماعيل بن ابراهيم، عن الجريري، عن ابي نضرة، عن ابي سعيد الخدري، - رضى الله عنه - قال كنا نغزو مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في رمضان فمنا الصايم ومنا المفطر فلا يجد الصايم على المفطر ولا المفطر على الصايم يرون ان من وجد قوة فصام فان ذلك حسن ويرون ان من وجد ضعفا فافطر فان ذلك حسن

Abu Nadra reported Abu Sa'id al. Khudri and Jabir b. Abdullah as saying:We travelled with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The observer of the fast observed it, and the breaker of the fast broke it, but none of them found fault with each other

حدثنا سعيد بن عمرو الاشعثي، وسهل بن عثمان، وسويد بن سعيد، وحسين، بن حريث كلهم عن مروان، - قال سعيد اخبرنا مروان بن معاوية، - عن عاصم، قال سمعت ابا نضرة، يحدث عن ابي سعيد الخدري، وجابر بن عبد الله، - رضى الله عنهم - قالا سافرنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فيصوم الصايم ويفطر المفطر فلا يعيب بعضهم على بعض

Humaid reported that Anas (Allah be pleased with him) was asked about fasting during Ramadan while travelling. He said:We travelled with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) during the month of Ramadan, but neither the observer of the fast found fault with the breaker of the fast, nor the breaker of the fast found fault with the observer of the fast

حدثنا يحيى بن يحيى، اخبرنا ابو خيثمة، عن حميد، قال سيل انس - رضى الله عنه - عن صوم رمضان في السفر فقال سافرنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في رمضان فلم يعب الصايم على المفطر ولا المفطر على الصايم

Abu Khalid al-Ahmar narrated from Humaid who said:I went out and was fasting; they said to me: Break (lit. go back, repeat). He said that Anas reported that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to set out on a journey and neither the observer of the fast found fault with the breaker of the fast, nor the breaker of the fast found fault with the observer of the fast. (One of the narrators Humaid said): I met Ibn Abi Mulaika who informed me the same thing on the authority of 'A'isha

وحدثنا ابو بكر بن ابي شيبة، حدثنا ابو خالد الاحمر، عن حميد، قال خرجت فصمت فقالوا لي اعد . قال فقلت ان انسا اخبرني ان اصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كانوا يسافرون فلا يعيب الصايم على المفطر ولا المفطر على الصايم . فلقيت ابن ابي مليكة فاخبرني عن عايشة - رضى الله عنها - بمثله

Anas (Allah be pleased with him) reported:We were with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on a journey. Some of us had been observing the fast and some of us had not been fasting. We got down at a place on a hot day. Most of us had the cloth for shelter. There were also those amongst us who sheltered (themselves against the rays of the) sun with the help of their hands. The observers of the fast fell down (on account of weakness). Those who had not observed it got up and pitched tents and watered the mounts. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The breakers of the fast have taken away the reward today

حدثنا ابو بكر بن ابي شيبة، اخبرنا ابو معاوية، عن عاصم، عن مورق، عن انس، - رضى الله عنه - قال كنا مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في السفر فمنا الصايم ومنا المفطر - قال - فنزلنا منزلا في يوم حار اكثرنا ظلا صاحب الكساء ومنا من يتقي الشمس بيده - قال - فسقط الصوام وقام المفطرون فضربوا الابنية وسقوا الركاب فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " ذهب المفطرون اليوم بالاجر

Anas (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was journeying (along with his Companions). Some of them had observed the fast whereas the others had broken it. Those who did not fast girded up their loins and worked, but the observers of the fast were too weak to work. Upon this he (the Messenger of Allah) said:Today the breakers of the fast have gone with the reward

وحدثنا ابو كريب، حدثنا حفص، عن عاصم الاحول، عن مورق، عن انس، - رضى الله عنه - قال كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في سفر فصام بعض وافطر بعض فتحزم المفطرون وعملوا وضعف الصوام عن بعض العمل - قال - فقال في ذلك " ذهب المفطرون اليوم بالاجر

Qaza'a reported:I came to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) and he was surrounded (by people), and when they dispersed I said to him: I am not going to ask you about what these people were asking. I ask you about fasting on a journey. Upon this he said: We travelled with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) towards Mecca and we had been observing fast. We halted at a place. There the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: You are nearing your enemy and breaking of fast would give you greater strength, and that was a concession (given to us). But some of us continued to observe the fast and some of us broke it. We then got down at another place and he (the Holy Prophet) said: You are going to encounter the enemy in the morning and breaking of the fast would give you strength, so break the fast. As it was a point of stress, so we broke the fast. But subsequently we saw ourselves observing the fast with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on a journey

حدثني محمد بن حاتم، حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي، عن معاوية بن صالح، عن ربيعة، قال حدثني قزعة، قال اتيت ابا سعيد الخدري - رضى الله عنه - وهو مكثور عليه فلما تفرق الناس عنه قلت اني لا اسالك عما يسالك هولاء عنه . سالته عن الصوم في السفر فقال سافرنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الى مكة ونحن صيام قال فنزلنا منزلا فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " انكم قد دنوتم من عدوكم والفطر اقوى لكم " . فكانت رخصة فمنا من صام ومنا من افطر ثم نزلنا منزلا اخر فقال " انكم مصبحو عدوكم والفطر اقوى لكم فافطروا " . وكانت عزمة فافطرنا ثم قال لقد رايتنا نصوم مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بعد ذلك في السفر

A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Hamza b. 'Amr al-Aslami asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about fasting on a journey, and he (the Holy Prophet) said:Fast if you like and break it if you like

حدثنا قتيبة بن سعيد، حدثنا ليث، عن هشام بن عروة، عن ابيه، عن عايشة، - رضى الله عنها - انها قالت سال حمزة بن عمرو الاسلمي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عن الصيام في السفر فقال " ان شيت فصم وان شيت فافطر

A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Hamza b. Amr al-Aslami asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) thus:Messenger of Allah, I am a person devoted much to fasting. Should I fast during the journey? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Fast if you like and break it if you like

وحدثنا ابو الربيع الزهراني، حدثنا حماد، - وهو ابن زيد - حدثنا هشام، عن ابيه، عن عايشة، - رضى الله عنها - ان حمزة بن عمرو الاسلمي، سال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال يا رسول الله اني رجل اسرد الصوم . افاصوم في السفر قال " صم ان شيت وا��طر ان شيت

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Hisham with the same chain of transmitters

وحدثناه يحيى بن يحيى، اخبرنا ابو معاوية، عن هشام، بهذا الاسناد . مثل حديث حماد بن زيد اني رجل اسرد الصوم

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Hisham with the same chain of transmitters that Hamza said:I am a person much used to fasting. Should I fast during the journey? (The rest of the hadith is the same)

وحدثنا ابو بكر بن ابي شيبة، وابو كريب قالا حدثنا ابن نمير، وقال ابو بكر، حدثنا عبد الرحيم بن سليمان، كلاهما عن هشام، بهذا الاسناد ان حمزة، قال اني رجل اصوم افاصوم في السفر

Hamza b. 'Amr al-Aslami (Allah be pleased with him) said:Messenger of Allah, I find strength in me for fasting on a journey; is there any sin upon me (in doing it)? Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: It is a concession from Allah. He who took advantage of it, it is good for him, and he who preferred to observe fast, there is no sin upon him. Harun (one of the narrators) in his narration said: 'lt is a concession, and he made no mention of" from Allah

وحدثني ابو الطاهر، وهارون بن سعيد الايلي، - قال هارون حدثنا وقال ابو الطاهر اخبرنا ابن وهب، اخبرني عمرو بن الحارث، عن ابي الاسود، عن عروة بن الزبير، عن ابي مراوح، عن حمزة بن عمرو الاسلمي، - رضى الله عنه - انه قال يا رسول الله اجد بي قوة على الصيام في السفر فهل على جناح فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " هي رخصة من الله فمن اخذ بها فحسن ومن احب ان يصوم فلا جناح عليه " . قال هارون في حديثه " هي رخصة " . ولم يذكر من الله

Abu Darda' (Allah be pleased with him) reported:We set out during the month of Ramadan with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in such an intense heat that one of us would place his hand over his head (in order to protect himself) against the excessive heat, and none among us was observing the fast, except the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and 'Abdullah b. Rawaha

حدثنا داود بن رشيد، حدثنا الوليد بن مسلم، عن سعيد بن عبد العزيز، عن اسماعيل، بن عبيد الله عن ام الدرداء، عن ابي الدرداء، - رضى الله عنه - قال خرجنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في شهر رمضان في حر شديد حتى ان كان احدنا ليضع يده على راسه من شدة الحر وما فينا صايم الا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وعبد الله بن رواحة

Abu Darda' reported:We were with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on some of his journeys on an intensely hot day so much so that a person would place his hand on his head (in order to protect himself) against excessive heat, and none amongst us was fasting but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and Abdullah b. Rawaha

حدثنا عبد الله بن مسلمة القعنبي، حدثنا هشام بن سعد، عن عثمان بن حيان، الدمشقي عن ام الدرداء، قالت قال ابو الدرداء لقد رايتنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في بعض اسفاره في يوم شديد الحر حتى ان الرجل ليضع يده على راسه من شدة الحر وما منا احد صايم الا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وعبد الله بن رواحة

Umm al-Fadl bint- al-Harith reported that some people argued about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the day of 'Arafa. Some of them said that he had been fasting, whereas the others said that he had not been fasting. I sent a cup of milk to him while he was riding his camel at 'Arafa, and he drank it

حدثنا يحيى بن يحيى، قال قرات على مالك عن ابي النضر، عن عمير، مولى عبد الله بن عباس عن ام الفضل بنت الحارث، ان ناسا، تماروا عندها يوم عرفة في صيام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال بعضهم هو صايم وقال بعضهم ليس بصايم . فارسلت اليه بقدح لبن وهو واقف على بعيره بعرفة فشربه

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Abu Nadr with the same chain of transmitters, but he did not mention that he was mounting (riding on) his camel

حدثنا اسحاق بن ابراهيم، وابن ابي عمر، عن سفيان، عن ابي النضر، بهذا الاسناد . ولم يذكر وهو واقف على بعيره . وقال عن عمير مولى ام الفضل

This hadith has been narrated by Abu Nadr on the authority of Umair, the freed slave of Umm al-Fadl, through the same chain of transmitters

حدثني زهير بن حرب، حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي، عن سفيان، عن سالم ابي، النضر بهذا الاسناد نحو حديث ابن عيينة وقال عن عمير، مولى ام الفضل
