Sahih al-Bukhari — Sales and Trade

Narrated `Abdullah:Some people used to buy foodstuff at the head of the market and used to sell it on the spot. Allah's Apostle forbade them to sell it till they brought it to (their) places

حدثنا مسدد، حدثنا يحيى، عن عبيد الله، قال حدثني نافع، عن عبد الله رضى الله عنه قال كانوا يبتاعون الطعام في اعلى السوق فيبيعونه في مكانهم، فنهاهم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ان يبيعوه في مكانه حتى ينقلوه

Narrated `Urwa:Aisha said, "Barira came to me and said, 'I have agreed with my masters to pay them nine Uqiyas (of gold) (in installments) one Uqiya per year; please help me.' I said, 'I am ready to pay the whole amount now provided your masters agree that your Wala' will be for me.' So, Barira went to her masters and told them about that offer but they refused to accept it. She returned, and at that time, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was sitting (present). Barira said, 'I told them of the offer but they did not accept it and insisted on having the Wala'.' The Prophet (ﷺ) heard that." `Aisha narrated the whole story to the Prophet. He said to her, "Buy her and stipulate that her Wala' would be yours as the Wala' is for the manumitter." `Aisha did so. Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) stood up in front of the people, and after glorifying Allah he said, "Amma Ba`du (i.e. then after)! What about the people who impose conditions which are not in Allah's Book (Laws)? Any condition that is not in Allah's Book (Laws) is invalid even if they were one hundred conditions, for Allah's decisions are the right ones and His conditions are the strong ones (firmer) and the Wala' will be for the manumitter

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، اخبرنا مالك، عن هشام بن عروة، عن ابيه، عن عايشة رضى الله عنها قالت جاءتني بريرة فقالت كاتبت اهلي على تسع اواق في كل عام وقية، فاعينيني. فقلت ان احب اهلك ان اعدها لهم ويكون ولاوك لي فعلت. فذهبت بريرة الى اهلها، فقالت لهم فابوا عليها، فجاءت من عندهم ورسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم جالس، فقالت اني قد عرضت ذلك عليهم فابوا، الا ان يكون الولاء لهم. فسمع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فاخبرت عايشة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال " خذيها واشترطي لهم الولاء، فانما الولاء لمن اعتق ". ففعلت عايشة ثم قام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في الناس، فحمد الله واثنى عليه، ثم قال " اما بعد ما بال رجال يشترطون شروطا ليست في كتاب الله، ما كان من شرط ليس في كتاب الله فهو باطل وان كان ماية شرط، قضاء الله احق، وشرط الله اوثق، وانما الولاء لمن اعتق

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:Aisha, (mother of the faithful believers) wanted to buy a slave girl and manumit her, but her masters said that they would sell her only on the condition that her Wala' would be for them. `Aisha told Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) of that. He said, "What they stipulate should not hinder you from buying her, as the Wala' is for the manumitted

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، اخبرنا مالك، عن نافع، عن عبد الله بن عمر رضى الله عنهما ان عايشة، ام المومنين ارادت ان تشتري جارية فتعتقها، فقال اهلها نبيعكها على ان ولاءها لنا. فذكرت ذلك لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال " لا يمنعك ذلك، فانما الولاء لمن اعتق

Narrated Ibn `Umar:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The selling of wheat for wheat is Riba (usury) except if it is handed from hand to hand and equal in amount. Similarly the selling of barley for barley, is Riba except if it is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and dates for dates is usury except if it is from hand to hand and equal in amount. حدثنا ابو الوليد، حدثنا الليث، عن ابن شهاب، عن مالك بن اوس، سمع عمر رضى الله عنهما عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " البر بالبر ربا الا هاء وهاء، والشعير بالشعير ربا الا هاء وهاء، والتمر بالتمر ربا الا هاء وهاء

Narrated Ibn `Umar:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade Muzabana; and Muzabana is the selling of fresh dates for dried old dates by measure, and the selling of fresh grapes for dried grapes by measure

حدثنا اسماعيل، حدثنا مالك، عن نافع، عن عبد الله بن عمر رضى الله عنهما ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم نهى عن المزابنة، والمزابنة بيع الثمر بالتمر كيلا، وبيع الزبيب بالكرم كيلا

Narrated Ibn `Umar:The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade Muzabana; and Muzabana is the selling of fresh fruit (without measuring it) for something by measure on the basis that if that thing turns to be more than the fruit, the increase would be for the seller of the fruit, and if it turns to be less, that would be of his lot. Narrated Ibn `Umar from Zaid bin Thabit that the Prophet (ﷺ) allowed the selling of the fruits on the trees after estimation (when they are ripe)

حدثنا ابو النعمان، حدثنا حماد بن زيد، عن ايوب، عن نافع، عن ابن عمر رضى الله عنهما ان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم نهى عن المزابنة قال والمزابنة ان يبيع الثمر بكيل، ان زاد فلي وان نقص فعلى. قال وحدثني زيد بن ثابت، ان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم رخص في العرايا بخرصها

Narrated Ibn Shihab:that Malik bin Aus said, "I was in need of change for one-hundred Dinars. Talha bin 'Ubaidullah called me and we discussed the matter, and he agreed to change (my Dinars). He took the gold pieces in his hands and fidgeted with them, and then said, "Wait till my storekeeper comes from the forest." `Umar was listening to that and said, "By Allah! You should not separate from Talha till you get the money from him, for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'The selling of gold for gold is Riba (usury) except if the exchange is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and similarly, the selling of wheat for wheat is Riba (usury) unless it is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and the selling of barley for barley is usury unless it is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and dates for dates, is usury unless it is from hand to hand and equal in amount

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، اخبرنا مالك، عن ابن شهاب، عن مالك بن اوس، اخبره انه التمس، صرفا بماية دينار، فدعاني طلحة بن عبيد الله فتراوضنا، حتى اصطرف مني، فاخذ الذهب يقلبها في يده، ثم قال حتى ياتي خازني من الغابة، وعمر يسمع ذلك، فقال والله لا تفارقه حتى تاخذ منه، قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " الذهب بالذهب ربا الا هاء وهاء، والبر بالبر ربا الا هاء وهاء، والشعير بالشعير ربا الا هاء وهاء، والتمر بالتمر ربا الا هاء وهاء

Narrated Abu Bakra:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Don't sell gold for gold unless equal in weight, nor silver for silver unless equal in weight, but you could sell gold for silver or silver for gold as you like

حدثنا صدقة بن الفضل، اخبرنا اسماعيل ابن علية، قال حدثني يحيى بن ابي اسحاق، حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن ابي بكرة، قال قال ابو بكرة رضى الله عنه قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " لا تبيعوا الذهب بالذهب الا سواء بسواء، والفضة بالفضة الا سواء بسواء، وبيعوا الذهب بالفضة والفضة بالذهب كيف شيتم

Narrated Abu Sa`id:(Concerning exchange) that he heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, "Do not sell gold for gold unless equal in weight, and do not sell silver unless equal in weight

حدثنا عبيد الله بن سعد، حدثنا عمي، حدثنا ابن اخي الزهري، عن عمه، قال حدثني سالم بن عبد الله، عن عبد الله بن عمر رضى الله عنهما ان ابا سعيد، حدثه مثل، ذلك حديثا عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فلقيه عبد الله بن عمر فقال يا ابا سعيد، ما هذا الذي تحدث عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال ابو سعيد في الصرف سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول " الذهب بالذهب مثلا بمثل والورق بالورق مثلا بمثل

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Do not sell gold for gold unless equivalent in weight, and do not sell less amount for greater amount or vice versa; and do not sell silver for silver unless equivalent in weight, and do not sell less amount for greater amount or vice versa and do not sell gold or silver that is not present at the moment of exchange for gold or silver that is present

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، اخبرنا مالك، عن نافع، عن ابي سعيد الخدري رضى الله عنه ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " لا تبيعوا الذهب بالذهب الا مثلا بمثل، ولا تشفوا بعضها على بعض، ولا تبيعوا الورق بالورق الا مثلا بمثل، ولا تشفوا بعضها على بعض، ولا تبيعوا منها غايبا بناجز

Narrated Abu Salih Az-Zaiyat:I heard Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri saying, "The selling of a Dinar for a Dinar, and a Dirham for a Dirham (is permissible)." I said to him, "Ibn `Abbas does not say the same." Abu Sa`id replied, "I asked Ibn `Abbas whether he had heard it from the Prophet (ﷺ) or seen it in the Holy Book. Ibn `Abbas replied, "I do not claim that, and you know Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) better than I, but Usama informed me that the Prophet had said, 'There is no Riba (in money exchange) except when it is not done from hand to hand (i.e. when there is delay in payment)

حدثنا علي بن عبد الله، حدثنا الضحاك بن مخلد، حدثنا ابن جريج، قال اخبرني عمرو بن دينار، ان ابا صالح الزيات، اخبره انه، سمع ابا سعيد الخدري رضى الله عنه يقول الدينار بالدينار، والدرهم بالدرهم. فقلت له فان ابن عباس لا يقوله. فقال ابو سعيد سالته فقلت سمعته من النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، او وجدته في كتاب الله قال كل ذلك لا اقول، وانتم اعلم برسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم مني، ولكنني اخبرني اسامة ان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " لا ربا الا في النسيية

Narrated Abu Salih Az-Zaiyat:I heard Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri saying, "The selling of a Dinar for a Dinar, and a Dirham for a Dirham (is permissible)." I said to him, "Ibn `Abbas does not say the same." Narrated Abu Al-Minhal:I asked Al-Bara' bin `Azib and Zaid bin Arqam about money exchanges. Each of them said, "This is better than I," and both of them said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade the selling of silver for gold on credit

حدثنا حفص بن عمر، حدثنا شعبة، قال اخبرني حبيب بن ابي ثابت، قال سمعت ابا المنهال، قال سالت البراء بن عازب وزيد بن ارقم رضى الله عنهم عن الصرف،، فكل واحد منهما يقول هذا خير مني. فكلاهما يقول نهى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عن بيع الذهب بالورق دينا

Narrated Abu Al-Minhal:I asked Al-Bara' bin `Azib and Zaid bin Arqam about money exchanges. Each of them said, "This is better than I," and both of them said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade the selling of silver for gold on credit

حدثنا حفص بن عمر، حدثنا شعبة، قال اخبرني حبيب بن ابي ثابت، قال سمعت ابا المنهال، قال سالت البراء بن عازب وزيد بن ارقم رضى الله عنهم عن الصرف،، فكل واحد منهما يقول هذا خير مني. فكلاهما يقول نهى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عن بيع الذهب بالورق دينا

Narrated `Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakra:that his father said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade the selling of gold for gold and silver for silver except if they are equivalent in weight, and allowed us to sell gold for silver and vice versa as we wished

حدثنا عمران بن ميسرة، حدثنا عباد بن العوام، اخبرنا يحيى بن ابي اسحاق، حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن ابي بكرة، عن ابيه رضى الله عنه قال نهى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عن الفضة بالفضة والذهب بالذهب، الا سواء بسواء، وامرنا ان نبتاع الذهب بالفضة كيف شينا، والفضة بالذهب كيف شينا

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Do not sell fruits of dates until they become free from all the dangers of being spoilt or blighted; and do not sell fresh dates for dry dates." Narrated Salim and `Abdullah from Zaid bin Thabit: "Later on Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) permitted the selling of ripe fruits on trees for fresh dates or dried dates in Bai'-al-'Araya, and did not allow it for any other kind of sale

حدثنا يحيى بن بكير، حدثنا الليث، عن عقيل، عن ابن شهاب، اخبرني سالم بن عبد الله، عن عبد الله بن عمر رضى الله عنهما ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " لا تبيعوا الثمر حتى يبدو صلاحه، ولا تبيعوا الثمر بالتمر " قال سالم واخبرني عبد الله، عن زيد بن ثابت، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم رخص بعد ذلك في بيع العرية بالرطب او بالتمر، ولم يرخص في غيره

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Do not sell fruits of dates until they become free from all the dangers of being spoilt or blighted; and do not sell fresh dates for dry dates." Narrated Salim and `Abdullah from Zaid bin Thabit: "Later on Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) permitted the selling of ripe fruits on trees for fresh dates or dried dates in Bai'-al-'Araya, and did not allow it for any other kind of sale

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade Muzabana; and Muzabana means the selling of fresh dates (on the trees) for dried dates by measure and also the selling of fresh grapes for dried grapes by measure

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، اخبرنا مالك، عن نافع، عن عبد الله بن عمر رضى الله عنهما ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم نهى عن المزابنة. والمزابنة اشتراء الثمر بالتمر كيلا، وبيع الكرم بالزبيب كيلا

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade Muzabana and Muhaqala; and Muzabana means the selling of ripe dates for dates still on the trees

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، اخبرنا مالك، عن داود بن الحصين، عن ابي سفيان، مولى ابن ابي احمد عن ابي سعيد الخدري رضى الله عنه ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم نهى عن المزابنة والمحاقلة. والمزابنة اشتراء الثمر بالتمر في رءوس النخل
