Sahih al-Bukhari — Fasting

Narrated Abu Bakr bin `Abdur-Rahman:My father and I went to `Aisha and she said, "I testify that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) at times used to get up in the morning in a state of Janaba from sexual intercourse, not from a wet dream and then he would fast that day." Then he went to Um Salama and she also narrated a similar thing

حدثنا اسماعيل، قال حدثني مالك، عن سمى، مولى ابي بكر بن عبد الرحمن بن الحارث بن هشام بن المغيرة انه سمع ابا بكر بن عبد الرحمن، كنت انا وابي،، فذهبت معه، حتى دخلنا على عايشة رضى الله عنها قالت اشهد على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ان كان ليصبح جنبا من جماع غير احتلام، ثم يصومه. ثم دخلنا على ام سلمة، فقالت مثل ذلك

Narrated Abu Huraira:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If somebody eats or drinks forgetfully then he should complete his fast, for what he has eaten or drunk, has been given to him by Allah

حدثنا عبدان، اخبرنا يزيد بن زريع، حدثنا هشام، حدثنا ابن سيرين، عن ابي هريرة رضى الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " اذا نسي فاكل وشرب فليتم صومه، فانما اطعمه الله وسقاه

Narrated Humran:I saw `Uthman performing ablution; he washed his hands thrice, rinsed his mouth and then washed his nose, by putting water in it and then blowing it out, and washed his face thrice, and then washed his right forearm up to the elbow thrice, and then the left-forearm up to the elbow thrice, then smeared his head with water, washed his right foot thrice, and then his left foot thrice and said, "I saw Allah's Apostle performing ablution similar to my present ablution, and then he said, 'Whoever performs ablution like my present ablution and then offers two rak`at in which he does not think of worldly things, all his previous sins will be forgiven

حدثنا عبدان، اخبرنا عبد الله، اخبرنا معمر، قال حدثني الزهري، عن عطاء بن يزيد، عن حمران، رايت عثمان رضى الله عنه توضا، فافرغ على يديه ثلاثا، ثم تمضمض واستنثر، ثم غسل وجهه ثلاثا، ثم غسل يده اليمنى الى المرفق ثلاثا، ثم غسل يده اليسرى الى المرفق ثلاثا، ثم مسح براسه، ثم غسل رجله اليمنى ثلاثا، ثم اليسرى ثلاثا، ثم قال رايت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم توضا نحو وضويي هذا، ثم قال " من توضا وضويي هذا، ثم يصلي ركعتين، لا يحدث نفسه فيهما بشىء، الا غفر له ما تقدم من ذنبه

Narrated `Aisha:A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said that he had been burnt (ruined). The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him what was the matter. He replied, "I had sexual intercourse with my wife in Ramadan (while I was fasting)." Then a basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he asked, "Where is the burnt (ruined) man?" He replied, "I am present." The Prophet (ﷺ) told him to give that basket in charity (as expiation)

حدثنا عبد الله بن منير، سمع يزيد بن هارون، حدثنا يحيى هو ابن سعيد ان عبد الرحمن بن القاسم، اخبره عن محمد بن جعفر بن الزبير بن العوام بن خويلد، عن عباد بن عبد الله بن الزبير، اخبره انه، سمع عايشة رضى الله عنها تقول ان رجلا اتى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال انه احترق. قال " مالك ". قال اصبت اهلي في رمضان. فاتي النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بمكتل، يدعى العرق فقال " اين المحترق ". قال انا. قال " تصدق بهذا

Narrated Abu Huraira:While we were sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ) a man came and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I have been ruined." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked what was the matter with him. He replied "I had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet (ﷺ) kept silent and while we were in that state, a big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) . He asked, "Where is the questioner?" He replied, "I (am here)." The Prophet (ﷺ) said (to him), "Take this (basket of dates) and give it in charity." The man said, "Should I give it to a person poorer than I? By Allah; there is no family between its (i.e. Medina's) two mountains who are poorer than I." The Prophet (ﷺ) smiled till his premolar teeth became visible and then said, 'Feed your family with it

حدثنا ابو اليمان، اخبرنا شعيب، عن الزهري، قال اخبرني حميد بن عبد الرحمن، ان ابا هريرة رضى الله عنه قال بينما نحن جلوس عند النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم اذ جاءه رجل، فقال يا رسول الله هلكت. قال " ما لك ". قال وقعت على امراتي وانا صايم. فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " هل تجد رقبة تعتقها ". قال لا. قال " فهل تستطيع ان تصوم شهرين متتابعين ". قال لا. فقال " فهل تجد اطعام ستين مسكينا ". قال لا. قال فمكث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فبينا نحن على ذلك اتي النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بعرق فيها تمر والعرق المكتل قال " اين السايل ". فقال انا. قال " خذها فتصدق به ". فقال الرجل اعلى افقر مني يا رسول الله فوالله ما بين لابتيها يريد الحرتين اهل بيت افقر من اهل بيتي، فضحك النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم حتى بدت انيابه ثم قال " اطعمه اهلك

Narrated Abu Huraira:A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "I had sexual intercourse with my wife on Ramadan (while fasting)." The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He replied in the negative. He asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the negative. (Abu Huraira added): Then a basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he said (to that man), "Feed (poor people) with this by way of atonement." He said, "(Should I feed it) to poorer people than we? There is no poorer house than ours between its (Medina's) mountains." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Then feed your family with it

حدثنا عثمان بن ابي شيبة، حدثنا جرير، عن منصور، عن الزهري، عن حميد بن عبد الرحمن، عن ابي هريرة رضى الله عنه جاء رجل الى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال ان الاخر وقع على امراته في رمضان. فقال " اتجد ما تحرر رقبة ". قال لا. قال " فتستطيع ان تصوم شهرين متتابعين ". قال لا. قال " افتجد ما تطعم به ستين مسكينا ". قال لا. قال فاتي النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بعرق فيه تمر وهو الزبيل قال " اطعم هذا عنك ". قال على احوج منا ما بين لابتيها اهل بيت احوج منا. قال " فاطعمه اهلك

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:The Prophet (ﷺ) was cupped while he was in the state of Ihram, and also while he was observing a fast

حدثنا معلى بن اسد، حدثنا وهيب، عن ايوب، عن عكرمة، عن ابن عباس رضى الله عنهما ان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم احتجم، وهو محرم واحتجم وهو صايم

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:The Prophet (ﷺ) was cupped while he was fasting

حدثنا ابو معمر، حدثنا عبد الوارث، حدثنا ايوب، عن عكرمة، عن ابن عباس رضى الله عنهما قال احتجم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو صايم

Narrated Thabit Al-Bunani:Anas bin Malik was asked whether they disliked the cupping for a fasting person. He replied in the negative and said, "Only if it causes weakness

حدثنا ادم بن ابي اياس، حدثنا شعبة، قال سمعت ثابتا البناني، يسال انس بن مالك رضى الله عنه اكنتم تكرهون الحجامة للصايم قال لا. الا من اجل الضعف. وزاد شبابة حدثنا شعبة على عهد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم

Narrated Ibn Abi `Aufa:We were in the company of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) on a journey. He said to a man, "Get down and mix Sawiq (powdered barley) with water for me." The man said, "The sun (has not set yet), O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)." The Prophet (ﷺ) again said to him, "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for me." The man again said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! The sun!" The Prophet (ﷺ) said to him (for the third time) "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for me." The man dismounted and mixed Sawiq with water for him. The Prophet (ﷺ) drank it and then beckoned with his hand (towards the East) and said, "When you see the night falling from this side, then a fasting person should break his fast

حدثنا علي بن عبد الله، حدثنا سفيان، عن ابي اسحاق الشيباني، سمع ابن ابي اوفى رضى الله عنه قال كنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في سفر فقال لرجل " انزل فاجدح لي ". قال يا رسول الله الشمس. قال " انزل فاجدح لي ". قال يا رسول الله الشمس. قال " انزل فاجدح لي ". فنزل، فجدح له، فشرب، ثم رمى بيده ها هنا، ثم قال " اذا رايتم الليل اقبل من ها هنا فقد افطر الصايم ". تابعه جرير وابو بكر بن عياش عن الشيباني عن ابن ابي اوفى قال كنت مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في سفر

Narrated `Aisha:Hamza bin `Amr Al-Aslami said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I fast continuously

حدثنا مسدد، حدثنا يحيى، عن هشام، قال حدثني ابي، عن عايشة، ان حمزة بن عمرو الاسلمي، قال يا رسول الله اني اسرد الصوم

Narrated `Aisha:(the wife of the Prophet) Hamza bin `Amr Al-Aslami asked the Prophet, "Should I fast while traveling?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "You may fast if you wish, and you may not fast if you wish

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، اخبرنا مالك، عن هشام بن عروة، عن ابيه، عن عايشة رضى الله عنها زوج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ان حمزة بن عمرو الاسلمي قال للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ااصوم في السفر وكان كثير الصيام. فقال " ان شيت فصم، وان شيت فافطر

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) set out for Mecca in Ramadan and he fasted, and when he reached Al-Kadid, he broke his fast and the people (with him) broke their fast too. (Abu `Abdullah said, "Al-Kadid is a land covered with water between Usfan and Qudaid)

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، اخبرنا مالك، عن ابن شهاب، عن عبيد الله بن عبد الله بن عتبة، عن ابن عباس رضى الله عنهما ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم خرج الى مكة في رمضان فصام حتى بلغ الكديد افطر، فافطر الناس. قال ابو عبد الله والكديد ماء بين عسفان وقديد

Narrated Abu Ad-Darda:We set out with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) on one of his journeys on a very hot day, and it was so hot that one had to put his hand over his head because of the severity of heat. None of us was fasting except the Prophet and Ibn Rawaha

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، حدثنا يحيى بن حمزة، عن عبد الرحمن بن يزيد بن جابر، ان اسماعيل بن عبيد الله، حدثه عن ام الدرداء، عن ابي الدرداء رضى الله عنه قال خرجنا مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في بعض اسفاره في يوم حار حتى يضع الرجل يده على راسه من شدة الحر، وما فينا صايم الا ما كان من النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وابن رواحة

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was on a journey and saw a crowd of people, and a man was being shaded (by them). He asked, "What is the matter?" They said, "He (the man) is fasting." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It is not righteousness that you fast on a journey

حدثنا ادم، حدثنا شعبة، حدثنا محمد بن عبد الرحمن الانصاري، قال سمعت محمد بن عمرو بن الحسن بن علي، عن جابر بن عبد الله رضى الله عنهم قال كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في سفر، فراى زحاما، ورجلا قد ظلل عليه، فقال " ما هذا ". فقالوا صايم. فقال " ليس من البر الصوم في السفر

Narrated Anas bin Malik:We used to travel with the Prophet (ﷺ) and neither did the fasting persons criticize those who were not fasting, nor did those who were not fasting criticize the fasting ones

حدثنا عبد الله بن مسلمة، عن مالك، عن حميد الطويل، عن انس بن مالك، قال كنا نسافر مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فلم يعب الصايم على المفطر، ولا المفطر على الصايم

Narrated Tawus:Ibn `Abbas said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) set out from Medina to Mecca and he fasted till he reached 'Usfan, where he asked for water and raised his hand to let the people see him, and then broke the fast, and did not fast after that till he reached Mecca, and that happened in Ramadan." Ibn `Abbas used to say, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (sometimes) fasted and (sometimes) did not fast during the journeys so whoever wished to fast could fast, and whoever wished not to fast, could do so

حدثنا موسى بن اسماعيل، حدثنا ابو عوانة، عن منصور، عن مجاهد، عن طاوس، عن ابن عباس رضى الله عنهما قال خرج رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من المدينة الى مكة، فصام حتى بلغ عسفان، ثم دعا بماء فرفعه الى يديه ليريه الناس فافطر، حتى قدم مكة، وذلك في رمضان فكان ابن عباس يقول قد صام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وافطر، فمن شاء صام، ومن شاء افطر

Narrated Nafi`:Ibn `Umar recited the verse: "They had a choice either to fast or to feed a poor person for every day, and said that the order of this Verse was canceled

حدثنا عياش، حدثنا عبد الاعلى، حدثنا عبيد الله، عن نافع، عن ابن عمر رضى الله عنهما قرا فدية طعام مساكين. قال هي منسوخة

Narrated `Aisha:Sometimes I missed some days of Ramadan, but could not fast in lieu of them except in the month of Sha'ban." Said Yahya, a sub-narrator, "She used to be busy serving the Prophet (ﷺ)

حدثنا احمد بن يونس، حدثنا زهير، حدثنا يحيى، عن ابي سلمة، قال سمعت عايشة رضى الله عنها تقول كان يكون على الصوم من رمضان، فما استطيع ان اقضي الا في شعبان. قال يحيى الشغل من النبي او بالنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم
