Sahih al-Bukhari — Obligatory Charity Tax (Zakat)

Narrated Anas:Some meat was presented to the Prophet (ﷺ) and it had been given to Barira (the freed slave-girl of Aisha) in charity. He said, "This meat is a thing of charity for Barira but it is a gift for us

حدثنا يحيى بن موسى، حدثنا وكيع، حدثنا شعبة، عن قتادة، عن انس رضى الله عنه ان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم اتي بلحم تصدق به على بريرة فقال " هو عليها صدقة، وهو لنا هدية ". وقال ابو داود انبانا شعبة، عن قتادة، سمع انسا، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم

Narrated Abu Ma`bad:(the slave of Ibn `Abbas) Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to Mu`adh when he sent him to Yemen, "You will go to the people of the Scripture. So, when you reach there, invite them to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Apostle. And if they obey you in that, tell them that Allah has enjoined on them five prayers in each day and night. And if they obey you in that tell them that Allah has made it obligatory on them to pay the Zakat which will be taken from the rich among them and given to the poor among them. If they obey you in that, then avoid taking the best of their possessions, and be afraid of the curse of an oppressed person because there is no screen between his invocation and Allah

حدثنا محمد، اخبرنا عبد الله، اخبرنا زكرياء بن اسحاق، عن يحيى بن عبد الله بن صيفي، عن ابي معبد، مولى ابن عباس عن ابن عباس رضى الله عنهما قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لمعاذ بن جبل حين بعثه الى اليمن " انك ستاتي قوما اهل كتاب، فاذا جيتهم فادعهم الى ان يشهدوا ان لا اله الا الله وان محمدا رسول الله، فان هم اطاعوا لك بذلك، فاخبرهم ان الله قد فرض عليهم خمس صلوات في كل يوم وليلة، فان هم اطاعوا لك بذلك فاخبرهم ان الله قد فرض عليهم صدقة توخذ من اغنيايهم فترد على فقرايهم، فان هم اطاعوا لك بذلك فاياك وكرايم اموالهم، واتق دعوة المظلوم، فانه ليس بينه وبين الله حجاب

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abu Aufa : Whenever a person came to the Prophet (ﷺ) with his alms, the Prophet (ﷺ) would say, "O Allah! Send your Blessings upon so and so." My father went to the Prophet (ﷺ) with his alms and the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O Allah! Send your blessings upon the offspring of Abu Aufa

حدثنا حفص بن عمر، حدثنا شعبة، عن عمرو، عن عبد الله بن ابي اوفى، قال كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم اذا اتاه قوم بصدقتهم قال " اللهم صل على ال فلان ". فاتاه ابي بصدقته، فقال " اللهم صل على ال ابي اوفى

Narrated Abu Huraira The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "A man from Bani Israel asked someone from Bani Israel to give him a loan of one thousand Dinars and the later gave it to him. The debtor went on a voyage (when the time for the payment of the debt became due) but he did not find a boat, so he took a piece of wood and bored it and put 1000 Dinars in it and threw it into the sea. The creditor went out and took the piece of wood to his family to be used as fire-wood." (See Hadith No. 488 B, Vol. 3). And the Prophet (ﷺ) narrated the narration (and said), "When he sawed the wood, he found his money

وقال الليث حدثني جعفر بن ربيعة، عن عبد الرحمن بن هرمز، عن ابي هريرة رضى الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم " ان رجلا من بني اسراييل سال بعض بني اسراييل بان يسلفه الف دينار، فدفعها اليه، فخرج في البحر، فلم يجد مركبا، فاخذ خشبة فنقرها فادخل فيها الف دينار، فرمى بها في البحر، فخرج الرجل الذي كان اسلفه، فاذا بالخشبة فاخذها لاهله حطبا فذكر الحديث فلما نشرها وجد المال

Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "There is no compensation for one killed or wounded by an animal or by falling in a well, or because of working in mines; but Khumus is compulsory on Rikaz

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، اخبرنا مالك، عن ابن شهاب، عن سعيد بن المسيب، وعن ابي سلمة بن عبد الرحمن، عن ابي هريرة رضى الله عنه ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " العجماء جبار، والبير جبار، والمعدن جبار، وفي الركاز الخمس

Narrated Abu Humaid Al-Sa`idi:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) appointed a man called Ibn Al-Lutbiya, from the tribe of Al-Asd to collect Zakat from Bani Sulaim. When he returned, (after collecting the Zakat) the Prophet (ﷺ) checked the account with him

حدثنا يوسف بن موسى، حدثنا ابو اسامة، اخبرنا هشام بن عروة، عن ابيه، عن ابي حميد الساعدي رضى الله عنه قال استعمل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم رجلا من الاسد على صدقات بني سليم يدعى ابن اللتبية، فلما جاء حاسبه

Narrated Anas:Some people from `Uraina tribe came to Medina and its climate did not suit them, so Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) allowed them to go to the herd of camels (given as Zakat) and they drank their milk and urine (as medicine) but they killed the shepherd and drove away all the camels. So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent (men) in their pursuit to catch them, and they were brought, and he had their hands and feet cut, and their eyes were branded with heated pieces of iron and they were left in the Harra (a stony place at Medina) biting the stones. حدثنا مسدد، حدثنا يحيى، عن شعبة، حدثنا قتادة، عن انس رضى الله عنه ان ناسا، من عرينة اجتووا المدينة، فرخص لهم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ان ياتوا ابل الصدقة فيشربوا من البانها وابوالها، فقتلوا الراعي واستاقوا الذود، فارسل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فاتي بهم، فقطع ايديهم وارجلهم وسمر اعينهم، وتركهم بالحرة يعضون الحجارة. تابعه ابو قلابة وحميد وثابت عن انس

Narrated Anas bin Malik:I took `Abdullah bin Abu Talha to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to perform Tahnik for him. (Tahnik was a custom among the Muslims that whenever a child was born they used to take it to the Prophet (ﷺ) who would chew a piece of date and put a part of its juice in the child's mouth). I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) and he had an instrument for branding in his hands and was branding the camels of Zakat

حدثنا ابراهيم بن المنذر، حدثنا الوليد، حدثنا ابو عمرو الاوزاعي، حدثني اسحاق بن عبد الله بن ابي طلحة، حدثني انس بن مالك رضى الله عنه قال غدوت الى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بعبد الله بن ابي طلحة ليحنكه، فوافيته في يده الميسم يسم ابل الصدقة

Narrated Ibn `Umar:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) enjoined the payment of one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the `Id prayer. (One Sa' = 3 Kilograms approx)

حدثنا يحيى بن محمد بن السكن، حدثنا محمد بن جهضم، حدثنا اسماعيل بن جعفر، عن عمر بن نافع، عن ابيه، عن ابن عمر رضى الله عنهما قال فرض رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم زكاة الفطر صاعا من تمر، او صاعا من شعير على العبد والحر، والذكر والانثى، والصغير والكبير من المسلمين، وامر بها ان تودى قبل خروج الناس الى الصلاة

Narrated Ibn `Umar:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) made it incumbent on all the slave or free Muslims, male or female, to pay one Sa' of dates or barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، اخبرنا مالك، عن نافع، عن ابن عمر رضى الله عنهما ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فرض زكاة الفطر صاعا من تمر، او صاعا من شعير، على كل حر او عبد، ذكر او انثى، من المسلمين

Narrated Abu Sa`id:We used to give one Sa' of barley as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr (per head)

حدثنا قبيصة، حدثنا سفيان، عن زيد بن اسلم، عن عياض بن عبد الله، عن ابي سعيد رضى الله عنه قال كنا نطعم الصدقة صاعا من شعير

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:We used to give one Sa' of meal or one Sa' of barley or one Sa' of dates, or one Sa' of cottage cheese or one Sa' of Raisins (dried grapes) as Zakat-ul-Fitr

حدثنا عبد الله بن يوسف، اخبرنا مالك، عن زيد بن اسلم، عن عياض بن عبد الله بن سعد بن ابي سرح العامري، انه سمع ابا سعيد الخدري رضى الله عنه يقول كنا نخرج زكاة الفطر صاعا من طعام، او صاعا من شعير، او صاعا من تمر، او صاعا من اقط، او صاعا من زبيب

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered (Muslims) to give one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr. The people regarded two Mudds of wheat as equal to that

حدثنا احمد بن يونس، حدثنا الليث، عن نافع، ان عبد الله، قال امر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بزكاة الفطر، صاعا من تمر، او صاعا من شعير. قال عبد الله رضى الله عنه فجعل الناس عدله مدين من حنطة

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:In the lifetime of the Prophet (ﷺ) we used to give one Sa' of food or one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley or one Sa' of Raisins (dried grapes) as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr. And when Muawiya became the Caliph and the wheat was (available in abundance) he said, "I think (observe) that one Mudd (of wheat) equals two Mudds (of any of the above mentioned things)

حدثنا عبد الله بن منير، سمع يزيد العدني، حدثنا سفيان، عن زيد بن اسلم، قال حدثني عياض بن عبد الله بن ابي سرح، عن ابي سعيد الخدري رضى الله عنه قال كنا نعطيها في زمان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم صاعا من طعام، او صاعا من تمر، او صاعا من شعير، او صاعا من زبيب، فلما جاء معاوية وجاءت السمراء قال ارى مدا من هذا يعدل مدين

Narrated Ibn `Umar:The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered the people to pay Zakat-ul-Fitr before going to the `Id prayer

حدثنا ادم، حدثنا حفص بن ميسرة، حدثنا موسى بن عقبة، عن نافع، عن ابن عمر رضى الله عنهما ان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم امر بزكاة الفطر قبل خروج الناس الى الصلاة

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:In the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) , we used to give one Sa' of food (edible things) as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr (to the poor). Our food used to be either of barley, raisins (dried grapes), cottage cheese or dates

حدثنا معاذ بن فضالة، حدثنا ابو عمر، عن زيد، عن عياض بن عبد الله بن سعد، عن ابي سعيد الخدري رضى الله عنه قال كنا نخرج في عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يوم الفطر صاعا من طعام. وقال ابو سعيد وكان طعامنا الشعير والزبيب والاقط والتمر

Narrated Nafi`:Ibn `Umar said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) made incumbent on every male or female, free man or slave, the payment of one Sa' of dates or barley as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr (or said Sadaqa-Ramadan)." The people then substituted half Sa' of wheat for that. Ibn `Umar used to give dates (as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr). Once there was scarcity of dates in Medina and Ibn `Umar gave barley. 'And Ibn `Umar used to give Sadaqat-ul- Fitr for every young and old person. He even used to give on behalf of my children. Ibn `Umar used to give Sadaqat-ul-Fitr to those who had been officially appointed for its collection. People used to give Sadaqat-ul-Fitr (even) a day or two before the `Id

حدثنا ابو النعمان، حدثنا حماد بن زيد، حدثنا ايوب، عن نافع، عن ابن عمر رضى الله عنهما قال فرض النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم صدقة الفطر او قال رمضان على الذكر والانثى، والحر والمملوك، صاعا من تمر او صاعا من شعير، فعدل الناس به نصف صاع من بر. فكان ابن عمر رضى الله عنهما يعطي التمر، فاعوز اهل المدينة من التمر فاعطى شعيرا، فكان ابن عمر يعطي عن الصغير والكبير، حتى ان كان يعطي عن بني، وكان ابن عمر رضى الله عنهما يعطيها الذين يقبلونها، وكانوا يعطون قبل الفطر بيوم او يومين

Narrated Ibn `Umar:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has made Sadaqat-ul-Fitr obligatory, (and it was), either one Sa' of barley or one Sa' of dates (and its payment was obligatory) on young and old people, and on free men as well as on slaves
